Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement (IRRR) ProjectThe Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement (IRRR) Project was initiated through a commitment of $3.3 million under the Australian Government's Backing Indigenous Ability (BIA) program originally announced as a part of the Connect Australia initiative in August 2005. Funding for the IRRR Project has been delivered via the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA). The project will improve the technical quality and level of service provided by licensed Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services (RIBS) by replacing obsolete radio equipment. The IRRR Project commenced in mid-2007 (referred to as Phase One) and supported 79 long term licensed Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services (RIBS). Surplus funds from Phase One of the project have been achieved primarily through the reduced costs of centrally purchasing equipment. As a result the CBF is conducting a second stage of the Project - IRRR Phase Two that will support RIBS services broadcasting under a temporary community broadcast licence (TCBL).
The Community Broadcasting Foundation is administering the IRRR project with the support and participation of the Remote Indigenous Media Organisation's (RIMO's), the Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA), and the Australian Indigenous Communication Association (AICA). The Foundation provides regular progress report to the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA).
