Guidelines for Outside Broadcast Equipment grants

This grant opportunity will only be offered in 2009/10.  Please read the general information for all applicants prior to submitting an application.

1. What's the objective of Outside Broadcast Equipment grants?

To assist stations to purchase IP based outside broadcasting (OB) equipment. For further information on IP based outside broadcasts you may wish to refer to the Mobile Broadcasting for Community Radio Stations Manual (PDF file, 1.2 MB).

2. Who is eligible to apply?

  • a community radio station with a long-term or a temporary licence

A station with a temporary licence must have been on air for at least two years cumulatively prior to applying.  Additional conditions are imposed on temporary licensees with regard to ownership of assets purchased with the grant.

Stations who currently have operational IP based outside broadcasting equipment are not eligible to apply.

3. How much can you apply for?

Up to $2,500. Only one application per station can be submitted.

4. What can you use the grant for?

To purchase and install IP based outside broadcast equipment.  You are welcome to choose your preferred hardware and software.  However, if you are new to IP based outside broadcasts you may wish to refer to the Mobile Broadcasting for Community Radio Stations Manual (PDF file, 1.2 MB).  This manual provides an overview of how to plan, purchase and install equipment for outside broadcasts.

Stations have the choice to nominate their preferred hardware and software which could include:

  • a laptop or portable computer (for outside broadcast location end)
  • an appropriate USB broadband modem
  • initial costs associated with establishing prepaid broadband (maximum of $100)
  • appropriate interface, for example an external soundcard or USB mixer
  • audio streaming software - BroadWave
  • microphone
  • small mixing console appropriate for OB

IP based outside broadcasts require two computers - one at the station end and the other at the OB location. This grant may assist purchasing a laptop for the OB location only.

5. What can't you use the grant for?
