Community Radio Audience Explosion

The results of the 2008 McNair Ingenuity Community Radio Listenership Survey were launched in Canberra on 14 October 2008.  An incredible 57% of Australians aged over 15 listen to community radio every month! That's over 9.5 million people listening every month.

In 2006 there was an impressive 47% of Australians aged over 15 listening to community radio every month. But in 2008, with 57% - it's safe to say there's been an explosion in the number of people listening to community radio.

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy said "The 2008 McNair Community Radio Listener Survey results demonstrate the enthusiasm the Australian listening audience has for community radio. These results show that Australians enjoy unique community radio programming and are motivated to access it in new ways."

Reasons people gave for listening to community radio (as % of listeners to community radio in an average week):

  • Specialist music programs (55%)
  • Local information / local news (53%)
  • They play Australian music / support local artists (46%)
  • The announcers sound like ordinary people / sound like 'one of us' (43%)
  • Programs not available elsewhere / hear something I don't hear anywhere else (43%)
  • Local voices / local personalities (42%)

The survey was commissioned by the CBAA with funding support from the CBF.
